Things to do in Lake Toba and advice

Me and 2 of my friends had book to go to Medan on the 3rd till 6th of september and we are planning to go to lake toba.. Any advice on how we should get there either by public or hiring personal car's?? And also what to do in lake toba.. I already have in mind which hotel to book already and that is the Toba Cottages... = )
